The menu at Ruta Ukrainian Restaurant is a delightful journey through the heart of Ukraine's rich culinary history. From hearty borscht to tender pierogi, every dish is a reflection of Ukrainian culture and culinary tradition. One standout is their borscht, which is made with fresh beets and a perfect balance of savory and slightly tangy flavors. Served hot, it's a comforting choice on a cold day, paired with a dollop of sour cream that enhances its depth.

Another favorite is the pierogi-those delicate dumplings stuffed with everything from mashed potatoes to cheese and mushrooms, to meat fillings like beef and pork. Each pierogi is hand-made and served with a side of sour cream and crispy onions. The variety is impressive, ensuring that there’s something for everyone. Vegetarian options are also available, catering to different dietary preferences without compromising the authentic taste.

For those looking to explore something more substantial, the grilled meats are not to be missed. The chicken Kyiv, a famous Ukrainian dish, is expertly prepared, with a crispy golden crust and a rich, garlicky butter filling that melts in your mouth. Similarly, the pork schnitzel is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and served with a side of mashed potatoes or sauerkraut that complements the flavors perfectly.

If you’re in the mood for something lighter, Ruta also offers a variety of salads and appetizers. The vinegret, a beet and potato salad, is a refreshing contrast to the heavier dishes and provides a nice balance to the meal. It’s a great way to start off before diving into the more filling entrees.

The restaurant sources many of its products directly from Ukraine, ensuring that the flavors stay true to the original recipes. The staff, friendly and knowledgeable, are always eager to offer recommendations and explain the various dishes, making your dining experience even more enjoyable.

For dessert, don’t miss out on the traditional Ukrainian honey cake. It’s a multi-layered cake that’s both sweet and rich, with a light texture that pairs wonderfully with a cup of tea or coffee. It's the perfect way to end a delicious meal and gives you a true taste of Ukrainian baking.

  • We tried Ruta for the first time recently, and were very favorably impressed. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable, and offers traditional Ukrainian fare at reasonable prices. We started our meal with The Patriot drink, a tasty and sweet concoction that when served mimics the colors of the Ukrainian flag. For our appetizer we ordered Deruny (fried potato pancakes), which are crispy on the outside, and served with sour cream and a mushroom topping. For our entrees, we ordered the Meat Holubtsi (stuffed cabbage), which is served with sour cream, and the Chicken Kyiv with mashed potatoes. All of our food was served at medium-high temperature, not piping hot, which was perfect, and allowed us to enjoy the delicious flavors. This is true comfort food, tasty, hearty, and filling. Portions were perfect, and left us feeling satisfied without being stuffed. For our desert, we split a slice of Ukrainian Honey Cake, which was sweet and very moist…the perfect way to end our dinner. If we had to pick something about Ruta we didn’t like, it would be the noise level, which was very loud…but that would not deter us from another visit there. We will definitely be back.

  • We had a great experience at Ruta in Bethesda! The food was fantastic, the staff were helpful and attentive and the interior had a cool aesthetic. We both ordered the honey green tea and it was soooooo good. You can taste the honey but its not overly sweet at all. Then we shared the burrata salad and it was excellent. The burrata was flavorful and not overly creamed like most places. For entrees I got the meat stuffed cabbage. It was stuffed with ground meat, carrots and rice. It had a great balance between the ingredients and my only complaint is that I wish there was more tomato sauce because it was delicious. My partner had the chicken kiev for his entree. He went bananas for the mushroom sauce and had me try a spoonful. Those were honestly the best mushrooms I’ve ever tasted. Finally we shared the Ruta cake. It was yummy but i wish it were a touch sweeter. We absolutely plan to be back. Heads up, we arrived on a Friday a little before 6pm and it was almost empty. But by the time we left after 7pm every table was take both inside and outside and they were sitting people at the bar. So worth making reservations to make sure you get a table especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • My mother's family is from the Ukraine so I grew up with Ukrainian food as part of our meals. Some of the names of menu items were a little different but the descriptions let me know it was the same foods I was used to. The "green borscht" is what I grew up knowing as chivey soup or sorrel soup. It was a little different but very tasty. I would have liked a bit more sorrel for my tastes but I enjoyed it.

  • I went with friends for an amazing lunch! There were four of us so we were able to sample a variety of the lunch menu, including the deruny, the varenyky assortment, meat holubtsi, the farmer's cheese pancakes, and the chicken and mushroom crepes-- all of which were wonderful but the crepes were incredible! We indulged in some dessert including the sweet dumplings and the Ruta cake, both wonderful. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the space was beautiful and comfortable. I can't wait to go back for dinner to try the stroganoff and some of the cocktail menu.

  • We had a great experience at Ruta with out of town guests. We started with green borscht and the special cold borscht and they were both really good. We tried the potato pancakes (duruny) which were phenomenal. We got the potato, sauerkraut, and short rib varenyky which were all great but the sauerkraut was my favorite. These are very flavorful and better than others I’ve tried! For entrees we tried the holubtsi and veg banosh and liked both. The honey cake is a must try for dessert. Super light and not too sweet. The tiramisu special was amazing too! All in all very impressive menu and the decor and music was excellent. Staff was super nice and service was great. Highly recommend

  • I loved this place. All of the food is so good and the honey cake is delicious. The servers and hostess were very polite. Just came back a 2nd time with friends and they enjoyed it. Thank you for providing great service again.

  • Friends and I enjoyed the Ukrainian Lunch which includes varenyky which are chicken dumplings, deruny which are potato pancakes, Ukrainian kovbasa which is pork sausage, and a salad which is a vinegrette sliced cabbage coleslaw. All served with sour cream on the side to place atop whatever one wishes. The Ukrainian beer was easy drinking pilsner. Menu only includes a few items for lunch, to try a wider variety of Ukrainian food, dinner is the way to go.
